- Monte: Monte is one of the most emblematic places on the island of Madeira. One of the highlights is the magnificent panoramic view over the city of Funchal and the sea that the 550 meters of altitude have to offer. A cooler climate hangs in the air and a peaceful environment is for some an asset that Monte has to offer. The Municipal Garden covers a large part of this parish and immediately invites you to go for a walk. The beautiful flowers, the century-old trees, some exotic species and the formidable landscape create a romantic and peaceful environment. To conclude the visit to Monte, the suggestion is to make the trip back to Funchal through the emblematic “basket carts” that are often featured on tourist posters in our region.
Its appearance took place in the 19th century, when it became necessary to find a solution to transport the wealthiest people from Monte to Funchal, without taking too long. The cars are made of wicker and slide on wooden skids. Since the route is always descending, the very force of gravity is used for displacement and the direction and the reduction of speed are controlled by two men who follow in the rear of the car.
The trip takes about 10 minutes and it is possible to glimpse a beautiful panoramic view over the bay of Funchal ... It is the ideal way to end your visit to Monte!

The Garden has an area of 35,000 m2 and more than 2000 exotic plants from all over the world, some of them in danger of extinction. It also has a Natural History Museum (with 15,000 specimens), the “Loiro Parque” (with about 500 exotic birds of 60 different species such as Parrots and Macaws), a herbarium (with 24,000 specimens of plants), and end a viewpoint where you can contemplate a magnificent view over the city of Funchal.
