Northeast of Madeira Island

We begin our journey in the vibrant city of Funchal, the capital of Madeira. As we leave the city behind, we head towards the Pináculo viewpoint, where a sweeping panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding landscapes awaits us — a perfect start to the day.

After taking in the breathtaking scenery at Pináculo, we continue our ascent to Montado do Pereiro. Nestled amidst lush greenery, this tranquil area invites nature lovers to unwind, explore the peaceful trails, and connect with Madeira’s serene natural environment.

Our route then takes us to Poiso, a well-known mountain pass and a key crossroads in Madeira’s road network. Here, we pause for a short break, enjoying the crisp mountain air and the picturesque surroundings.

From Poiso, we descend to the charming village of Ribeiro Frio, celebrated for its rich natural beauty and traditional trout farms. A visit to the renowned Balcões viewpoint is a must — offering breathtaking views over deep valleys and verdant mountains cloaked in the island’s ancient laurel forest, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

We then make our way to Santana, one of Madeira’s most iconic villages, famed for its traditional thatched-roof houses. Here, we stop for a well-deserved lunch (optional) at a local restaurant, where you can savour authentic Madeiran dishes such as espetada (grilled beef skewers) and bolo do caco (traditional flatbread with garlic butter).

With renewed energy, we proceed to the scenic area of Cortado, a peaceful location that showcases Madeira’s rugged terrain and natural splendor — ideal for a moment of quiet appreciation.

Next, we arrive at the Guindaste viewpoint, perched above the dramatic northeastern coastline. The steep cliffs and crashing waves create a spectacular backdrop, perfect for photography or simply soaking in the beauty of the island.

To conclude our journey, we head to Ponta do Rosto at the easternmost tip of Madeira, in the dramatic landscape of Ponta de São Lourenço. Known for its striking cliffs and rock formations, this viewpoint offers a magnificent farewell, with panoramic views over the vast Atlantic and the island’s unique geological formations.

After a day filled with awe-inspiring sights and memorable experiences, we return to Funchal, bringing our scenic adventure to a close.
