Nestled at the bottom of the charming Machico Valley, also known as the “Valley of the Mimosas” for its abundance of these fragrant yellow blossoms, this peaceful walk follows the scenic Levada dos Maroços. Along this delightful 6-kilometre stretch, we are surrounded by Madeira’s rural soul: a patchwork of traditional agricultural terraces, small cultivated plots, and stone walls that tell stories of generations of local farmers.
As we follow the gentle flow of the levada, the landscape reveals a harmonious blend of nature and tradition. The scent of flowers and fruit trees fills the air, while the sound of running water and distant birdsong creates a soothing soundtrack to the journey.
The trail offers stunning panoramic views over the Machico Valley and its picturesque bay, the very place where Portuguese navigators first set foot on the island of Madeira in the early 15th century. This makes the Levada dos Maroços not just a walk through nature, but also a journey through the island’s history and culture, filled with colour, peace, and timeless charm.
