Discover one of Madeira’s most iconic mountain walks on a private hiking experience from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo, connecting two of the highest peaks of the island. This unforgettable trail offers dramatic mountain scenery, impressive rock formations, tunnels, steep ascents and descents, and breathtaking views over the central mountain massif of Madeira.
Along the way, you will cross one of the most spectacular landscapes on the island, with narrow paths carved into the mountains, panoramic viewpoints and, on clear days, incredible views above the clouds. This is one of Madeira’s most famous hikes and a must-do experience for adventurous travellers who want to explore the island’s wild mountain scenery.
The area is also rich in natural heritage. During the walk, it is possible to observe bird species associated with Madeira and Macaronesia, as well as high-altitude vegetation and endemic plants that make this mountain environment so unique.
Near Pico Ruivo, the highest point of Madeira, the trail continues towards the area of Achada do Teixeira, where you can admire the famous “Homem em Pé”, a distinctive basalt rock formation located along the path.
